Meet NikoFrank Productions
Happy Feminist Wednesday! This week we chatted with Maggie Politi and Spiro Marcos, the duo behind NikoFrank Productions about "Ladies in Action," an effort to produce 5 short films all written, directed, and starring women.
Tell us who you are and what you do!
We're NikoFrank Productions :) We specialize in writing & producing original comedic sketches & shorts using a full team of top of line professional actors, directors, video & sound editors, & photographers.
In just one year, we've been official selections in over 15 festivals, won the Berlin Flash Film Festival, written 40 roles for women, teamed up with SeekaTv & are now embarking on an exciting new initiative, Ladies in Action where we aim to produce 5 short films all written & directed by women.
Tell us how you got started?
We're both NYC based actors with professional experience in musical theatre, tv, voice overs & commercials. We also love to create together. So, our production company started because we realized that creating our own work was more fulfilling than waiting around to be cast. We released our first short film February 17th, 2017 & have been enjoying the ride ever since.
How does feminism influences your work?
Comedy in the U.S. has been primarily male dominated with only 37% of women in leading roles in 2016. NYC based late night comedy shows have predominately hired white male writers on staff for the past decade.
This is absurd! We were motivated to make a change to support the rise of female voices in the film & comedy industry. It's very important in today's political climate to stand for equal pay and equal opportunity for women.
But it's even more essential for men to be standing beside us. We are honored to be a vehicle for creative women, to share their voices, lend their humor, and change the narrative. This project will not only showcase the work of women, but leave them feeling empowered and eager to continue creating.
How do you stay motivated and inspired by your work?
Whenever we're feeling frustrated with the political climate, or with the industry in general, we tend to gravitate towards things that inspire us.
Photographs, movies, a broadway show, a walk in central park at sunset. Anything that fuels the soul. Whatever it is for you! We have to take care of ourselves in these moments of frustration & remember that we can all inspire each other to work together in a supportive, collaborate, & respectful environment.
Do you have any advice for anyone starting out in your field?
Our biggest advice to anyone who wants to act, direct, or produce is simply to start creating some of the work yourself. Sometimes it can be scary to put yourself out there, but it's such a rewarding & exhilarating experience.
Start small. Write down your ideas, put them in action. Use the social media platforms that are available to you. We highly recommend it! You'll be pleasantly surprised how many people reach out who want to be creating the same type of work as you. Slowly but surely your circle of creators will be right at your fingertips.
