Meet Kristen Flowers

Happy Feminist Wednesday! This week we chatted with Kristen Flowers from the web-series Meetings and Manicures about getting her career started in radio, taking the leap to make her web-series, and trusting her gut.

Introduce yourself, tell us who you are and what you do?

I'm the host of Nick and Kristen in the Morning on 96.5 KOIT FM in San Francisco. I live in the Bay Area and when I'm not on the radio, I'm working on my novel, playing with my three cats or hosting my web series, Meetings and Manicures. The show spotlights women that are doing amazing things in the business world while we get our nails done. It's a chance for me to learn from some of the best and brightest. I also love getting a good manicure and Lacquerbar in Berkeley is the best place to go.

How did you get started in your field?

I got started in radio eleven years ago after graduating with a film degree and quickly realized that there weren't any film jobs I actually wanted. I had to take a couple radio courses as part of my degree, so after college, I applied as a Promotions and Marketing assistant to a station in Los Angeles. I got the job and I was hooked! Now, I host the morning show with my husband and it's the perfect situation.

How does feminism influence your work?

Feminism is important to me because everyone benefits from it. As a society, if we want to grow, we need to invest in our communities. We need to lift people up, pay them fairly and seek out diversity. I always grew up thinking that I was equal to any one else.

Radio is primarily a male driven industry and some of my old bosses even told me I didn't belong, but I never listened. The problem is that some women DO listen, and they shouldn't. We need to be telling every woman that she is valuable and important as everyone around her.

What's your favorite self-care practice?

To avoid feminist burnout, I hit the nail salon! It's also where I conduct my Meetings and Manicures web series but I find that taking care of yourself is important. I like to go in, grab a glass of wine and watch as the artist does something really cool with my nails. I also love a good hand massage!

Any advice for someone starting out?

To anyone wanting to be in radio or to create your own web series I would say, just take the leap. There are going to be people along the way saying that you can't do it or you don't offer anything interesting, but trust your gut.

There are also kind and generous people out there willing to take your email or call, you just have to reach out. Everyone started somewhere and you could be the next Oprah or Ellen, you just have to start something. I'm a person with a lot of interests and passions and so I always say, do it all. You never know what passion project is going to hit and become a success.
