Bad Ass Bitch of the Week: Fair Girls

tumblr_mri1hiS3KJ1sa7h11o1_500200 years after slavery was banned in America, 27 million people worldwide are still subjected to the slave trade today. And unfortunately, being that women are internationally viewed as second class citizens, it's no surprise that we are affected the most. Fortunately, there are women in our society trying to change that statistic. Andrea Powell is one half of the female run non for profit Fair Girls, whose mission is to prevent ’’the exploitation of girls worldwide with empowerment and education.’’

Feminist Wednesday reader Katie T got the opportunity to intern with Andrea and described her as ’’a spunky little thing that once told me that founding your own nonprofit is only worth it if whatever it is your fighting for makes you so infuriated that it keeps you up at night. Then you have no choice.’’

My favorite part of the organization is that they teach girls empowerment through jewelry therapy. Through JewelGirls, participants ’’come together each week to create unique jewelry while gaining access to therapy, new life skills, financial management skills, and pathways toward a future free of poverty and violence. Fifty percent of proceeds go directly to the individual girl artist while the remaining 50 percent goes toward purchasing new supplies and materials to sustain her program. ’’
