The Girl Gang Missives Vol. 18

GGMBy Nicole BelangerThe Girl Gang Missives is a weekly report on the badass things that women are making/creating/building/writing.

[dropcap background="no" color="#333333"]T[/dropcap]his week, the women are making their prom dates wait, cutting people open (you know, for science) and building booming beauty businesses.[wc_divider style="solid" line="double" margin_top="5" margin_bottom="5"]

  1. Your prom was lame: At least I'm assuming it was since you didn't have a banner with your name on it, nor did you make an entrance that included a multi-performer choreographed routine to Formation. Bet you feel like a real loser right about now (it's okay, I do, too).[divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  2. Bitches get stuff done -- and also they joust: Or at least they will in England, now, thanks to the reversal of a rule prohibiting women from participating in heritage jousting tournaments. Because we should all have the right to jab each other with giant pointy sticks -- that's my feminism.[divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  3. A Facebook chatbot you'll actually want to talk to: Yes, it's true that marketers everywhere are salivating over the "engagement" opportunities that the Facebook chatbots might offer, but there are other, less irritating uses coming to light -- like Shine, a service that was designed to help provide convenient emotional support to stressed-out young women.[divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  4. Brexit is more than inane Twitter jokes: "In a way, whether we remain or leave is immaterial at this particular juncture," writes recent UK-to-USA transplant Bim Adewunmi. "What it has brought to the fore is the thing that needs observing and beating back. This is what happens when you attempt to modulate the tenor of poisonous political discourse by matching it." Read the full piece here.[divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  5. First we topple the patriarchy... Then we have the first meeting of the new, all-female G4. Let's see how it goes, shall we?[divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  6. Calling all politically-minded Canuck girls! If you are a Canadian woman between the ages of 18 and 23, Equal Voice (an organization dedicated to improving the representation of women in politics), is looking for you. As part of their "Daughter of the Vote" campaign, they are bringing together hundreds of young women with political ambitions to come represent their riding in Ottawa.[divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  7. Because becoming a surgeon isn't hard enough: June 21st was National Aboriginal Day in Canada and as part of the celebrations, CBC highlighted Indigenous trailblazers from coast to coast -- including Dr. Nadine Caron, Canada's first-ever female, First Nations general surgeon. In this interview, she speaks to the challenges and racism she's faced on her path, and her hopes for the future of culturally-safe health care in Canada.[divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  8. Would you get naked for a focus group? Comedian and author Sara Benincasa did for her latest short film, and the results are surprisingly touching and tremendously funny. Watch and share, kids![divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  9. Natural hair school + Tennessee = 1 booming business: The best business advice I've ever heard is to make sure that people want the product that you're selling. And if the waitlist for stylist and educator Tamika Turner's natural hair school in Tennessee is any indication, it sounds like she heeded that important advice.  [divider type="white" spacing="10"]
  10. Something giggle-worthy for the road: Attention, betrothed couples under 30: you only get one.
