feministflashback_v1In 1855 a public speaker and human rights activist named Lucy Stone married Henry Blackwell. She was the first woman in the US to get married and keep her birth-name.  In addition to keeping her own name, the couple wrote up an agreement they called the Marriage Protest.

The Protest, which was printed and distributed at their wedding, described the kind of marriage equality they hoped to live and promote.
