Meet Musician R E L
Happy Feminist Wednesday, R E L. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in your craft?
Hi Feminist Wednesday! I'm R E L and I make music. I got started singing before I could talk and have always loved telling stories. I think its so fundamental to the human experience. Music connects us, heart to heart.
Tell us why feminism is important to you and how it influences your work?
Feminism is important to me because I'm a female living in society. Feminism is humanism, anyone who says otherwise doesn't understand what it is. Equality brings everyone up.
Feminism influences my work because it drives me to keep working towards my dreams, and in the content of my work as well. In my songs, I tell my own experiences with love, loss, pain and growth - and question the status quo.
Listen to my song "Factory" for a feminist bop! I consider my newest releases feminist in that I hope they inspire self-love in my listeners.
What do you do to avoid feminist burnout? Whats your favorite self care practice?
I avoid dwelling in negativity, and focus on what I can do. My favorite self care practices are meditation, yoga, CFR (cortical field re-education, look it up, it's amazing), hanging with my dog, eating yummy nutritious food, singing and being in nature.
Do you have any advice for anyone starting out in your field?
Trust your heart and do what feels right! So many people will tell you the "right" way to do things, but ultimately there's no formula or mold, and if you decide to step into one, know it's a cookie cutter approach!
You're unique and so is everyone, so they'll appreciate your honest expression if you put it out there. Make sure you're enjoying the process, too. It can be challenging, but so rewarding.
